Using an adjustable base shouldn’t be complicated. We like remote controls with several presets, custom slots, and easy-to-press buttons.

Because adjustable beds can be heavy, we like brands that offer in-home setup, also known as white-glove delivery.

We avoid adjustable beds with loud motors and jarring movements. Your comfort (and your partner’s) is a priority.

We prefer companies that offer trial periods because adjustable bases usually don’t come with one. Even a short trial period is better than none.

The Nectar Premier Adjustable Bed Frame is the best adjustable bed for people who want as many features as possible. In addition to the usual presets like zero gravity and anti-snoring, it offers three massage modes, under-bed lighting, and four USB ports. The Nectar Adjustable Bed Frame is also one of the few options on the market with a trial period (50 nights).

This base comes with one memory position and five preset positions (TV, reading, zero gravity, anti-snore, and flat). No other brand offers this many presets, despite being one of the most sought-after features. To control the base, you can use a remote control or smartphone app.

The base works with platform bed frames, but there’s no way to attach a standalone headboard. Its height can be adjusted during setup by attaching 3- or 8-inch legs and 2-inch extenders. The base itself is 4 inches high, so the total height can reach up to 15 inches before adding a mattress.

The Nectar warranty is significantly shorter than other brands in this review. But there is a way to upgrade your coverage. During checkout, you can add an extended warranty through Extend starting at $169, which will lengthen your warranty to 10 years. This will also add coverage for accidental damage—a service that, to our knowledge, no other brand offers.

According to customer service, white-glove delivery that includes complete setup of your new bed frame is $199 for the first item, free for the second, and $49 for each additional item. But in the past, customer service has told us that white-glove delivery was only available for certain adjustable base sizes or if you also purchased a mattress. Since the policy changes frequently, check with customer support to ensure your purchase qualifies for white-glove delivery, as well as the pricing.

The base arrives in a box that weighs 149 pounds, so it’s a good idea to ask someone to help you bring it inside if you decide to skip professional setup.

What about the Nectar Classic Adjustable Base?

Nectar also sells the Classic Adjustable Base for $100 less than the Premier Adjustable Base. The Classic has no massage feature, no USB ports, no programmable memory, and no smartphone app, and it supports 100 pounds less than the Premier. Our Reviews Team thinks the Classic isn’t a good deal. It’s worth spending an extra $100 for the full-featured Premier.

The Nectar Adjustable Bed Frame works with any mattress compatible with an adjustable bed frame. In general, that includes most foam and hybrid mattresses, but check with the manufacturer to confirm. All Nectar mattresses are compatible with this base and come with a one-year trial period and a lifetime warranty. Our Reviews Team considers the Nectar Hybrid the best affordable mattress and the Nectar Premier Copper Hybrid the best cooling mattress.

Adjustable bases arrive in heavy boxes that can weigh 150 pounds or more, so you may want to consider a company that offers professional in-home delivery and setup (what we’ve referred to as white-glove delivery). Most brands charge $130 or more for this service—if they offer it at all—but every Saatva customer gets it for free. Delivery personnel bring the adjustable base into your home, set it up, and show you how to use each feature. It saves time, protects you from muscle strain, and gives you the confidence of knowing your bed is working as it should. They can even haul away your old base.

The Saatva Adjustable Base Plus comes with one programmable button and presets for zero gravity, anti-snore, flat, and head-up (elevates the head of the bed to its maximum head height) positions. This base also offers under-bed lighting, full-body massage functions, and wall alignment ⓘ A feature that shifts the head of the bed closer to the wall as it elevates, keeping you closer to your nightstand. 1 as extra useful perks. The remote even has a flashlight to help you navigate to and from the bed at night, which may help prevent falls. During installation, the base height can be adjusted in half-inch increments from 13–18 inches.

Unlike the Nectar Premier Adjustable Base, the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus has no USB ports and no smartphone app. Otherwise, Saatva offers similar features with a much longer warranty and a lower price. Unfortunately, Saatva doesn’t offer a trial period for the Adjustable Base Plus.

Another reason we like Saatva is its reputation. The company is accredited by BBB with an A+ rating, as well as an impressive 4.83 out of 5 stars from more than 1,700 customer reviews. The company has a similar rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars based on more than 1,100 reviews on Trustpilot. Reviewers from both sites rave about the quality of the mattresses, the customer service, and the delivery process. Excellent reviews are rare in the adjustable bed industry, so earning near five-star ratings on multiple review sites is quite a feat.

What about the regular Saatva Adjustable Base?

You can save at least $250 by purchasing the Saatva Adjustable Base instead of the Adjustable Base Plus, but our Reviews Team doesn’t recommend it. The regular Saatva Adjustable Base has no presets, memory slots, under-bed lighting, or massage mode. It also comes in fewer sizes than the Plus.

The Saatva HD and 14.5-inch Saatva Classic luxury hybrid innerspring won’t work with an adjustable base because they’re too thick to easily fold. If you want to pair another mattress with the Saatva Adjustable Base Plus, check with the manufacturer to confirm it can be used with an adjustable base. Using the wrong type of mattress with an adjustable base could void the mattress’s warranty.

But there’s a good reason to buy from DreamCloud instead of Nectar: better savings on the hybrid mattress and base bundle. Although both brands offer a bundle with 50% off the total price of an adjustable base and mattress, you end up saving more money with DreamCloud if you’re shopping for a hybrid mattress. Nectar has slightly better prices for bundling a memory foam mattress with the adjustable base.

For example, a queen-size Nectar Premier Hybrid bundled with an adjustable base costs $1,848. A queen-size DreamCloud Premier Hybrid bundled with an adjustable base costs $1,698.

You also get the seven-piece Serenity bedding bundle (two cooling pillows, a mattress protector, and a four-piece sheet set) and a 10-year extended warranty with the DreamCloud bundle, as with the Nectar bundle. Professional setup starts at $199—also the same price as Nectar.

All DreamCloud mattresses are compatible with the adjustable base. The company sells three memory foam and three hybrid mattresses. Our Reviews Team prefers the hybrid mattresses due to good pressure relief, edge stability, and support for the lower back. You may be able to use your existing mattress with the DreamCloud adjustable base if it’s a memory foam or hybrid mattress. Check with the mattress manufacturer before using it with an adjustable bed.

Many reviewers are happy with their base and say it has improved their sleep, but a notable number of negative reviews say the base quickly stopped working or that the mattress shifted from side to side during adjustments.

According to our recent survey of adjustable bed owners, price and features were the top two most important considerations when purchasing an adjustable bed. Helix impressed our team by offering its adjustable base at a lower average price than competitors while still offering many of the same features. The base retails for $1,248 but is often on sale for less than $1,000.

Like our top pick from Nectar, the Helix Adjustable Base has three massage modes and under-bed lighting. It also features two USB ports, a remote control, and three memory programs. On the downside, the base can’t be returned once it’s out of the original packaging.

The Helix Adjustable base has only one preset: zero gravity. After you decide which angles work best for you, you can program other popular presets, like anti-snore or TV, into one of the memory slots. Our testers said this was easy: “You hold one of the colored memory buttons on the remote for seven seconds, and it saves.” The base doesn’t connect to a smartphone app for additional control.

Professional setup is available in some ZIP codes starting at $139. During installation, the height can be adjusted in 3-inch increments up to 12 inches. The base comes with a 10-year warranty.

All Helix mattresses work with the Helix Adjustable Base. The company sells more than 20 mattresses—including one of our picks for best mattress, the Helix Midnight Luxe—so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to find one that suits your needs. Unlike Nectar and DreamCloud, Helix doesn’t offer special discounts for bundling an adjustable base with a mattress. Most hybrid or memory foam mattresses should work with the Helix Adjustable Base. Still, it’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer before purchasing an adjustable bed mattress, as some will void the mattress’s warranty if it’s used with an adjustable base. Mattresses that are too tall or stiff also won’t bend easily on an adjustable base.

The Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base is the best basic adjustable base for people on a budget. It starts at $699 for a twin XL but is often on sale for even less. It comes with a remote and an optional wristband to prevent the remote from getting lost in the sheets. The remote has four presets: zero gravity, anti-snore, lounge, and TV.

There’s also a large button to return the base to a flat position. You can fine-tune any setting with the up and down arrows, which are clearly labeled for the head and foot of the bed. Our testers noted that it takes about 45 seconds for the base to fully incline from a flat position, which they thought was smooth and gradual. “It’s a steady, slow movement, which I appreciate since I don’t want to feel like I’m being catapulted out of bed,” one tester said.

The remote also has a flashlight for safe navigation to and from the bed, plus two memory presets.

The base comes with a long power cord and a 10-year warranty but no trial period. Professional setup isn’t available.

What about the Brooklyn Bedding Ascension Ultra Adjustable Power Base?

Brooklyn Bedding sells an upgraded adjustable base called the Ascension Ultra. It adds two USB ports, massage mode, and under-bed lighting to the Ascension Luxe and starts at $1,099 for a twin XL.

If you want those bells and whistles, we think it’s worth checking out the Helix Adjustable Base instead. It’s more affordable and comes with a 50-night trial period. On the other hand, it offers fewer presets than the Brooklyn Bedding bases.

All Brooklyn Bedding mattresses work with the Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base. This brand often appears on our best-of lists as a budget-friendly option and a good choice for side sleepers or people with shoulder pain. Brooklyn Bedding also makes one of the best firm mattresses—the Plank Firm—and one of the best mattresses for higher-weight people—the Titan Plus.

Other memory foam and hybrid mattresses should be compatible with the Ascension Luxe Adjustable Power Base. Check with the mattress manufacturer to confirm.

While our Reviews Team feels the five models outlined above represent the best adjustable beds available, there is one runner-up to consider.

The Puffy Serenity Adjustable Base comes with a generous 101-night trial period, which is among the longest in the industry. It is also priced fairly compared to other brands in our list, starting at $1,199 before promotions.

This base is a great choice if you want to try your bed for an extended period to ensure it works for you. It didn’t make our list only because it doesn’t offer many standout features that rival its competitors, like Saatva or Nectar.

We began our testing process by researching and comparing adjustable bases, surveying 1,000 adjustable base users, interviewing sleep experts, physical therapists, and other medical professionals about the pros and cons of adjustable bases, and running a focus group to understand the adjustable bed buying process.

Once we understood what people look for in an adjustable base, we developed scoring criteria, which you can read about on our adjustable beds review methodology page.

Out of a list of 103 models, we initially chose 30 bases to test due to their competitive prices, features, warranties, and reputations. We continue to test more adjustable bases each month. Some adjustable bases are shipped to our studio for testing, and other models are tested in mattress showrooms throughout the U.S. Here’s a summary of what our testers evaluate:

Our testers use and analyze each adjustable base’s remote control. They assess whether the buttons are intuitive to use and easy to push. Testers press every button to make sure the base responds as expected, and they note whether anything surprising or confusing happens. They also look for interesting features that affect ease of use, such as USB charging port placement or a built-in flashlight on the remote.

If applicable, testers also use the base’s smartphone app, ensuring it’s easy to pair with the base. They evaluate the app’s navigation—is it easy to find the controls and presets? Is there anything unique on the app that isn’t available on the remote control?

Presets also affect ease of use. Our testers look for common presets on each remote: anti-snore, zero-gravity, and flat. They test each one to make sure it functions correctly, noting any bases that seem to offer excessive or minimal elevation compared to other bases on the same setting. If extra presets are present, testers try them and offer an opinion about their comfort and usefulness.

Next, our testers save a custom setting on the remote (if applicable) by following the instructions in the user manual.

Testers measure how long it takes for the adjustable base to fully incline from a flat position, with slow, gradual movement preferred over a fast, catapult-like adjustment. Testers are also asked to describe the motion—is it smooth or jarring? Does the base elevate enough for comfortable lounging, or does it seem to have a limited range of motion?

Testers use a decibel meter to measure the motor’s noise level during adjustments. They’re also asked to listen for any other noises that come from the base when it isn’t being adjusted. We look for quiet motors and squeak-free bases that won’t disturb a sleeping partner.

We like to see adjustable bases with convenient features, especially if the base remains affordable compared to the competition.

If applicable, our testers see how easy it is to reach USB charging ports and to plug in a charging cable while remaining in bed. We also ask our testers to try each massage mode and compare how it feels to other models that offer massage. They also trigger the under-bed lighting to test how fast it turns on and how well it illuminates the edge of the bed.

Testers look for features that could impact setup and convenience, such as cord length and adjustable leg heights. They also note whether an adjustable base seems unusually bulky or flimsy. Because adjustable bases can be heavy and unwieldy, we like brands that offer professional setup services.

Testers contact the customer service line to ask questions about each model. We want to know if their call was answered promptly, if they felt pushed to make a sale, and whether the customer service representative seemed knowledgeable about the product. We also prefer models that offer free delivery, lengthy warranties, and trial periods.

Here’s a closer look at the variety of features you can choose from when shopping for an adjustable bed.

Adjustable bases may come with one-touch presets, meaning you can press a button on the remote, and the bed will adjust to a preset position. The most common presets are the anti-snore and zero-gravity positions. A button that returns the base to a flat position is also useful.

Raising the head of the bed can relieve issues like acid reflux, snoring, and sinus pressure. It’s also a great position for reading, watching TV, or working on a laptop. Foot elevation improves circulation and may reduce pressure on the lower back. It can even help relieve swelling in the legs and feet, making it particularly beneficial for those with circulation issues or pregnant sleepers.

Look for an adjustable base that allows you to save custom presets, too. If there’s a certain angle that feels comfortable while you sleep or lounge in bed, you can easily return to that position with the touch of a button.

Many adjustable beds come equipped with under-bed LED lighting to illuminate the area under and around the edge of the bed, potentially reducing the risk of falling at night.

While adjustable bed massage settings feel more like vibration than kneading, they can promote relaxation. Some beds offer various massage modes, so you can choose between vibration patterns and intensities.

USB ports built into the adjustable bed frame offers a power source for charging devices without the need to reach or get out of bed. USB-C ports are the most common type found on adjustable beds, but some include USB-A ports too.

This advanced feature shifts the head of the bed closer to the wall as it elevates, keeping you within reaching distance of your nightstand.

Proper mattress height can make it easier, safer, and more comfortable to get in and out of bed. To help you achieve the right height, most adjustable beds come with legs in various sizes. Unfortunately, height isn’t something you can adjust at the push of a button—you’ll have to disassemble the base if you want a taller or shorter bed in the future.

Most adjustable beds are controlled through a remote. A few connect to a smartphone app instead, and some give you both options. Make sure the remote’s symbols are easy to understand and that the buttons are easy to press. Consider getting a corded remote to prevent it from getting lost.

Professional setup

Adjustable beds require some assembly. Consider buying from a company that offers professional (also called white-glove) delivery and setup if you have limited strength or mobility.

Before you make the decision on whether an adjustable bed is right for you and your sleep needs, make sure to weigh the pros and cons.

More than 40% of respondents to our survey of adjustable bed users reported their primary motivations for purchasing an adjustable bed were increased comfort and pain relief. Many sleepers find that elevating the foot of the bed can relieve pressure and pain in the lower back and legs for temporary relief, depending on your condition [5] Goldman S.M.
