BHOPAL — A disturbing incident from the Dindori district in Madhya Pradesh has caused public outrage after a viral video showed a pregnant widow of a murder victim cleaning a blood-stained hospital bed. The tragic event took place after a brutal attack left three members of her family dead due to a longstanding land dispute.

The video, recorded at the Gadasarai Health Centre, shows the five-month pregnant woman being handed tissue paper by a hospital staff as she cleanses the blood from the bed on which her husband’s body was lying. Witnesses allege that, instead of receiving support from the hospital staff, she was compelled to perform this task herself.

After years of legal conflict, the court had recently ruled in favour of Dharam Singh, who had subsequently planted paddy on the contested land. However, tensions resurfaced when Kanwal Singh, the opposing family member, arrived with his family to harvest the crop. Dharam Singh began recording the scene, which reportedly escalated into violence, leading to a fatal assault on him and his two sons.

Following the attack, the injured family members were taken to the local health centre, where doctors confirmed their death. Shivraj Singh, one of Dharam Singh’s sons, was among the deceased. When Shivraj’s widow arrived at the hospital, she found herself in a situation that only deepened her grief: hospital staff allegedly handed her tissue paper and asked her to clean the bed stained with her husband’s blood. The video shows her cleaning the bed, and throwing away blood-soaked tissues, while a hospital staff member stands by, failing to offer any meaningful assistance. The woman’s young child was also present during this traumatic ordeal.

In response to the backlash, Dr Chandrasekhar Tecum from the Primary Health Centre denied the allegations, claiming that the woman was not cleaning the bed, but was simply handing over her blood-stained clothes to the police as evidence. However, the footage contradicts this explanation, showing her wiping the bed clean rather than gathering evidence. The incident has raised serious questions about the lack of compassion and support shown to the grieving widow during such a distressing time.

The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and online, with many calling for accountability from the hospital administration. Critics argue that forcing a bereaved, pregnant woman to clean a blood-stained hospital bed is both insensitive and a stark reflection of systemic issues within healthcare facilities, especially in rural areas.

Calls for an investigation have grown, with demands for disciplinary action against the staff involved. This incident highlights the urgent need for improved training in patient care and empathetic support, particularly in rural health centres where resources and guidance may be lacking.
